MEET JONATHAN W. BURTON, DMD

Dr. Burton grew up in Cave-in-Rock, IL.  After graduating high school in 1990, he attended Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg where he received his Associate of Science degree. He then completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biological Sciences at Southern Illinois University- Carbondale.

Following graduation from SIUC in 1994, Dr. Burton began his dental studies at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in Alton, IL.  He completed his studies there in 1998 and was awarded the Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree, with high honors, in 1998.

Dr. Burton then moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where he completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics between 1998 and 2003. UIHC has one of the oldest and most respected OMS training programs in the country, and is routinely ranked as one of America’s Top Hospitals.  While there, Dr. Burton received advanced training in anesthesia, medicine, general surgery, and oral/maxillofacial surgery at UIHC, the Iowa City Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, and the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.

After completion of his OMS training at UIHC, Dr. Burton returned to the Metro East (St. Louis) area where he was a partner in a group practice, Southern Illinois Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, in Belleville and Edwardsville, IL, for six years.  He was also an assistant professor in oral surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine .

It was in late 2008 that Dr. Burton and his wife, Suzanne, decided to move back closer to their roots in Southern Illinois.  Office space was purchased in the Office Place building in Carbondale and in February 2009 construction began on the new office.  On June 1, 2009, Shawnee Hills Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery officially saw its first patient and began serving patients across all of the Southern Illinois counties.  

Dr. Burton became a diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in 2007, after undergoing both the rigorous written and oral certifying examinations. (The Mission of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is to help set the standards for the confluence of education, training, and experience for the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and to assure the public of an acceptable level of attainment by those who are Board Certified.)  Dr. Burton successfully passed the board recertification exam in 2017 (required every ten years to remain a board certified surgeon.)

Dr. Burton is married to Suzanne, also a native of Cave-in-Rock. Suzanne is the office manager at SHOMS. They have one daughter, Natalie, who is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s world renowned Fashion Design program.  After gaining some experience in the stage and film industry, Natalie went on to obtain her master’s degree in Costume Design at the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama and is currently a costume designer working on projects in the stage and film industry.

Dr. Burton has served as the president of the Southern Illinois Dental Society and is a member of the following dental organizations:
